Populate a Microsoft Word template

Hi,

I am trying to get the "Populate a Microsoft Word template" tool to work for an agent that I am building. The agent/tool is not recognizing the Content control in the document that is required for it to be able to populate the document template. I have attached the document. The document has one content control area and I simply want the agent to add a word to the document but I get the following error:

Error Message: The connector 'Word Online (Business)' returned an HTTP error with code 400. Inner Error: The selected file doesn't contain template elements. Error Code: ConnectorRequestFailure Conversation Id: e7171829-9916-43fe-b02c-65e67d4c3f18 Time (UTC): 2025-09-20T17:10:03.273Z

I would really appreciate some help on how to fix this.

Hi there,

I've tried this a couple of times before, and what worked best for me was creating an agent flow to populate the data. This approach allows me to send a JSON payload generated by the agent to the flow, where I can parse it before populating the template.

This method gives you more control over the structure and content, and helps avoid issues with dynamic data binding or formatting inconsistencies.

hello,

i suggest to my opinion two way :

The "good old one" with the word connector and dedicated control area in template file : use with power automate. If it's not regognize, often it's because : Old office format or not in template format (when you save the document)

With copilot studio you could do with other tool, by using code tool you have access to generate document, here is a tuto for excel but it give you the process on how to and could ask for a word based on a template you give the to agent. https://www.matthewdevaney.com/secret-way-to-create-excel-file-using-copilot-studio-prompts/

First option will be 100% reliable on the template. Second one will be AI so... open to AI interpretation.
