General Guidance with app design & QR Codes

Hi,

I am looking to build a model driven app for a warehousing solution.

I will have a column called Location which will represent where the product is located.

Options can be anything but will start off

Rack 1, Shelf 1

Rack 1, Shelf 2

Rack 1, Shelf 3

Rack 2, Shelf 1

Rack 2, Shelf 2

Rack 2, Shelf 3

Location A

Location B

Location C

1st Question is what Data type should I make this column, Text or can I use Choice?

2nd Question is that I would like to put a QR code say on each location so when an item is removed or placed in a location, that field will be updated when I open the QR code on that shelf.

3rd Question is how would I create the QR code in the 1st place?

Thanks in advance.

Todd

    Hi @Tango

I would recommend creating a separate table to manage the locations and then setting up a lookup field to that location.  You will be able to add additional metadata around this location, identify relationships, etc. with this model.

Normally for warehouse management / inventory situations I am seeing barcodes used vs. QR codes but you could definitely use either.  You should store a field on your location that will be the location ID.  This could actually be a autonumber field that would be incremented every time you create a new location.  This field could then be used to generate the barcode or QR code respectively.

Canvas Apps support generating a barcode:  https://youtu.be/ojdHj0xqNNU?si=hm6s_xxSq9RaS2De
