I'm afraid there is no supported way of doing it and am sure there is no unsupported way approach with it.

Note:
It depends on the Process Stage and OOB Automatically adjust it.

I am wondering how some people customized the bpf stages. See the below image, default shape is cirle but they changed it to circle.

As per the link which you have shared I can see there is no way of customising the field width.
And as per OOB feature the date field is displaying in a drop-down I can't see any CIRCLE over there
We can edit the flow by opening respective Business process flow but as I said earlier no way of Customization as per my knowledge.

The image you pasted is from OLDER version of dynamics CRM. Now Model driven uses UCI which has circle as default ribbon which can not be customized.
Please convey your client that it is not customizable and not recommended by Microsoft.
