Powerapps Pen input bug

Hello Powerapps Community,

The Issue:

I have one issue with the Pen input, since the last Power Apps Update. I wanted to use the Pen input Section for drawing on a picture (Ipad Pro 10,5 inch version).
So I did set the Picture as background and put the Pen input Box over the picture to give the user the feeling that he is actually drawing on the Picture. My problem now is, that it stops drawing after uncertain actions and sometimes doesn't work at all. Sometimes I can draw and write and sometimes I can't, it simply stops after an uncertain time. I noticed that sometimes when I change the color or write with my finger instead of the apple pencil it stops working. The Strange thing about this is that I can use all the other functions of the Powerapps. Even another Pen input on my other Screen which is much smaller because I want it to use for signatures. I have to restart Powerapps completely to be able to write and draw in this Section again. Even more strange is that a couple of weeks ago it worked just fine. I noticed too that I don't have this issue if I am using the App on the Pc or having fewer issues when I am using an Ipad Pro 11(but after a couple of seconds or actions I am having the same issue again). I think its a Bug that pop-ups on Tablet devices.

What have I tried:

Deleting the whole Pen input Component and added a new one.
Tried to scale it down or to move it.
Tried to reset the Pen input Value

What can I do?

Hi @Anonymous ,

Do you put the Pen Input Control on a Image within your app?

Please make sure you have made the Pen Input control in front of the background image via clicking the "Bring to front" option:

As an alternative solution, please consider set the BackgroundImage property of current screen to your image data (rather than add a Image control to display the image), and then add the Pen Input control within this screen, then try your app again, check if the issue is solved.

Hello,

Thank you for the fast reply. But this unfortunately did't work either. Its like the Pen input deactivates itself somehow.

@Anonymous It looks like only iPads may meet this issue, have you tried to upgrade the IOS to latest version?
Normally the pen input's display mode won't change, but you can add a Label to monitor the pen input's display mode, if it's changed to View/Disabled.
Set Text property of any label as "PenInput1.DisplayMode"
And if it's related to layouts issue, have you tried to resize the pen input or remove the pic background, will it work?

Hello @Anonymous ,

Does this issue happen when you are using the control on one screen or do you navigate out and back to the screen with the peninput? Also if you revert your app to a version published with an older studio, does this issue not occur at all?

Hello,

yes i tried it but the label shows "edit" even if it stops working, so I dont think that Powerapps is changing the Displaymode.
I tried the Second solution too. But unfortunately it didn't work either. I even created a new app and created a Pen input there. I faced the same issue here.

Hello,

It happens when i am using the Control. I draw something and then it suddenly stops.
But i tried your suggestion ant yes an older version works fine. But i did so many changes to the App (besides the Peniput), so I want avoiding to rebuild the app.

Hey @Anonymous ,

We've only made one recent change to this control which should have only effected the output image but it is possible that this caused a regression to the control.... I haven't been able to reproduce the issue but we've recently reverted the change and it should be available in the next version studio (You will need to republish to see the change).

I have exactly same issue when using control on iPad - can't find a fix and have no other tablet to test on.

Did anyone find a solution to this issue ? I have the exact issue and would appreciate any solutions / workaround people have found (even a reset pen input button to fix it). Logging out is not a great solution!

Hi @mobaky @Anonymous I have the same issue. I have been reliably been able to recreate the issue. If I put my whole palm on the screen and move around for a few seconds the pen input stops working. As you say all other controls (colour selector etc working fine). I not sure why, is it a loss of focus or iPad setting or multiple touch points causing the pen input to crash. Can’t seem to find a workaround either.
