Unable to include sample apps and data in existing environment database for learning

Hi,

I created a couple of Apps last year but want to expand on them and my knowledge, so decided to go through the MS Power App learning documentation.

The very first thing it asks you to do is run a sample App called Fundraiser.

In order to run this App you must add a database to the environment in use and choose to import sample data and apps when creating the DB.

My environment was set up over a year ago and I did not choose this option.

I am unable to add another environment of any type due to licencing restrictions, nor edit the database or remove the database in order to re add it with the sample inclusion. I don't even use the CDS /dataverse currently but I have read that even MS cannot delete it.

Is there any way for me to move forward with this, because I can't believe MS would be this incompetent to not have a solution?

Thanks,

    Hi @Neil_ODonnell,

If you are identifying an environment that can not be deleted that is probably the "Default" environment and that is true, this is Default and is part of the overall system and used in many ways.

You can create additional environments in your instance as long as you have enough space to do this (i.e. 1 GB).  if you do not have this space then you would need to buy a license to allocate it.  Example is if you buy a Power Apps Per App license and deploy in your tenant then you will be allocated 10GB of storage for that user.

If I have it wrong as far as your situation, maybe you could show some screen shots of your environments.

    1.  Go to https://admin.powerplatform.microsoft.com/

    2.  On the left navigation, click on "Resources" and "Capacity"

The following is what I see in my "trial" tenant I have setup so you will see there is "no capacity" available, which is done on purpose.  If you assign licensing to the tenant then you will be able to create environments because you will have space.

Hope this helps.  Please accept if answered your question or Like if helped in some way.

    Thanks,

    Hi Drew,

    Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately I cannot add another environment unless I pay for it, but I don't really want to do that as all I am trying to accomplish is to complete the free MS Power App course from the learning centre.

If I was able to remove the empty Dataverse from my environment I may be able to re add the Dataverse and choose to include the options for adding template Apps and Data (the requirement for step 1 in the course), but as it was not included when originally set up, it seems there is no way to add it now, or to remove the Dataverse altogether, which is unused,

    Kind Regards

    Neil

    Hi @Neil_ODonnell,

Did you try the steps in this article to get a trial setup?  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/signup-for-powerapps

Let me know if this doesn't work and we can look at other approaches.

    Thanks!

    Drew

    Hi @Neil_ODonnell,

I would recommend using the PowerApps Community Plan. It is ideal for learning scenarios like yours. You can provision this developer environment in your current tenant without incurring any storage cost or count toward your current storage quotas.

I don't believe this will work in the Dev environment as "sample data" is not available in Dev environments.  However, if it is, this is how you it can be done:

Add or remove sample data - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs

In the Power Platform admin center

    1. Make sure you have the System Administrator security role or equivalent permissions.

      Check your security role

      • Follow the steps in View your user profile.

      • Don’t have the correct permissions? Contact your system administrator.

    2. Sign into the Power Platform admin center

    3. Select Environments in the left navigation pane, select your environment, and then select Settings on the top menu bar.

    4. Select Data management to expand the category, then select Sample data.

    5. A message appears that tells you whether the sample data is installed.

    6. Select an action at the bottom of the screen:

      • Remove Sample Data, and then select Close.
      • Install Sample Data, and then select Close.
      • To close the screen without making changes, just select Close.

Beyond this, your only other option (besides paying) is to create another trial tenant hence having the option to create a new environment again.

Note: if not mistaken 1 tenant (or license? ...not sure which)... can only have 1 Trial environment.

Agree with @ChrisPiasecki. Note @Neil_ODonnell the community plan (type of environment) was renamed to Developer.  You can create one here:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/maker/developer-plan

    Hope this helps!

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much for this, @CL_Abyss . I subscribed to the Power Apps Developer Plan which gave you a personal and private environment but forgot to install the Sample Data. Could not find how to add the sample data in admin center, finally googled for it and stumbled upon this reply.

@CL_Abyssanswer should really be the one marked as solution here...

This was EXACTLY what I needed.  Thanks CL_Abyss.  I don't know why it is so hard to find the way to set this parameter after the dataverse is already established.   And even the Enable Data button in the lower right corner and then hit the CLOSE button is so awkwardly placed.   Thanks for the insightful answer.
