Adding a Dataverse database to an existing environment

I would like to add a database to my production environment.  This environment is currently used to host many production apps already but it isn't associated with a database.  I would like to add it now - is there any harm in adding a database to an environment that has been in use for well over a year?  Please advise and thanks!

As long as there is no Dataverse (CDS) database in the environment already there is no harm in adding one.  But you can only have one Dataverse database in each environment.

    Hi @RosalindK,

To supplement on @Pstork1, make sure your production environment is not on the Default environment. If it is, I would create a new environment for your Dataverse, see tip #1 from https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/News-Announcements/Top-15-best-practices-when-configuring-Power-Platform-and/ba-p/850804

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response.  My production environment currently has no database.  Mostly, I was concerned that if I add one now, there might be some unexpected impact on the apps within that environment.  I don't have that environment backed up so I want to proceed with caution.  Do you recommend I back up all of the apps in that environment before adding the database?

Thank you for your response.  My production environment is indeed separate from the default environment.  My goal is to only use the default environment when absolutely necessary.

    Hi Pstork1

Is there any extra cost incurred if we add Dataverse ?

Capacity is required to create a Dataverse.  If you have capacity available then there is no extra cost. Capacity is provided when you purchase premium licensing. So if you don't have capacity you can either buy additional capacity or additional licenses to get it.
