Document Template - Refresh XML Mapping and Edit Template

In Power Apps, model-driven app, I followed this instruction: Use Word templates to create standardized documents - Power Platform | Microsoft Learn and worked great as a mail merge.  However, now I need to edit the template after adding new columns in the table.   Is there a way to edit the existing document template with the new columns (i.e. refreshing the XML Mapping in Word)?

I tried the following:

1. Added new columns in table and published

2. In Document Template settings - selected and edited the current template.  It gives a message 'Read-only, you don't have access to edit' - I have system admin role in the environment and have full access. I'm not sure where to check the access to edit existing template.

3. I downloaded the existing template (via 'edit' option) but the XML mapping does not include the new columns.

4. Created a new template which has all the new columns but the Word file is blank.

I'm hoping there's a way to avoid creating new template and re-creating the entire document (i.e. letterhead, standard text, etc.) each time the customer requests new columns/data to include in the template.

    Hi @Tamras,
    Unfortunately there's no elegant way to edit directly. You'll have to re-create a new template and copy paste from the old one (with tweaks) or save a copy of the old one and manually edit the definitions. I don't use this method anymore actually (I beleive it's on its way to deprecation) and I know it's the same for a lot of other people. I recommend using Power Automate instead. Here's a nice article: https://powerautomate.microsoft.com/fr-fr/blog/generate-word-documents-in-your-flows/
    Hope this helps!

    @EricRegnier I've used Power Automate to create a Mail Merge from SharePoint to Word so hopefully, it's the same or similar process. I'll check out the link you've provided. Thank you!

    Yup it would be the exact same process except you're getting the data from Dataverse instead of SharePoint

    @Tamras

    If you still want to use the existing template please check the below article on how to edit the metadata:
