Model driven view shows blank values when using group by and clicking back button

Hi,

I created a model driven app and set up a quite standard view, but I have some troubles when using group by.

These are the steps to reproduce the issue:
1. Open the app, go to a page and standard view
2. Group on a certain column, e.g. 'Inspection Date' by Month (picture 1)
3. Open a record
4. Click on the back button in the app or mouse
5. The view shows only (blank) (picture 2)

Is this a bug, or is there anything that would explain this behavior?

Thanks for helping!

Kind regards,
Cloë

    Hi,

The behavior you are encountering when using the "Group By" feature in a Model-Driven App view and then navigating back to it appears to be a known issue related to how views and grouped data are managed in the Dynamics 365/Power Platform environment. Here's an explanation of potential causes and steps to resolve or mitigate it:

    Possible Causes

    1. Session State Reset:

      • When you navigate back from a record, the state of the grouped view might not persist, causing it to display incorrectly (e.g., showing (blank)).
    2. Caching or Refresh Issue:

      • Grouping requires additional client-side processing to render, and navigating away might clear or corrupt the grouping context.
    3. Bug in the Platform:

      • There might be a bug in the "Group By" functionality for Model-Driven Apps, particularly if it's newly introduced or hasn't been widely optimized.
    4. Column Data or Formatting Issue:

      • If the column being grouped has formatting inconsistencies (e.g., NULL values or unexpected data types), it might cause issues when the view reloads.

    Steps to Troubleshoot

    1. Test with a Different Column

    • Group the view by another column (e.g., by Year or a text field) to see if the issue persists.
    • This will help determine if the problem is column-specific.

    2. Check for NULL or Blank Values

    • Ensure that the column used for grouping does not contain NULL or blank values.
    • Use a calculated or transformed field if necessary to avoid grouping by empty values.

    3. Test in a Different Browser or Session

    • Sometimes, browser-specific caching issues can cause view rendering problems.
    • Test in a different browser or in a private/incognito session to rule out this possibility.

    4. Review View Customizations

    • Check if any customizations, such as scripts or extensions, might interfere with the grouped view rendering.
    • Temporarily disable them to see if the issue resolves.

    5. Update the Environment

    • Ensure your Dynamics 365/Power Platform environment is up-to-date with the latest updates or patches, as grouping-related issues may have been addressed in newer releases.

    6. Use the "Reset View" Option

    • After navigating back, try refreshing the view or resetting it using the built-in reset option to restore the correct grouping.

    7. Check User Role Permissions

    • Verify that the user accessing the view has sufficient permissions for the column being grouped and any related records.

    Workarounds

    1. Avoid Grouping by Date Columns Directly

      • Create a calculated field (e.g., "Inspection Month") that extracts the month or other desired grouping criteria. Use this field for grouping instead.
    2. Custom Back Navigation Handling

      • Customize the app's navigation experience to ensure grouped views retain their state when navigating back. This can be done using JavaScript or Power FX.
    3. Leverage Advanced Find or Excel

      • If grouping behavior is critical, consider exporting the data to Excel or using Advanced Find to group and analyze it outside the app.

    Next Steps

If the issue persists after these steps:

    • Submit a Support Ticket: Report the issue to Microsoft through Power Platform Admin Center, including screenshots and detailed steps to reproduce.
    • Monitor Known Issues: Check Microsoft's Known Issues documentation or community forums for updates related to this functionality.

When you group by a column in a Model-Driven App, the state of the grouped view isn't always preserved when navigating back to the view from a record. This can result in unexpected behavior, such as showing only (blank) rows. It’s not necessarily a bug but rather a limitation of how the grouping and navigation state are managed.
