Model Driven App Field Label Size Limit?

Hi,

I'm not a developer. However, a developer I'm working with is building out a form in a model driven app in a dev environment.

When you click into the record from the view, there are a number of different tabs. One of the tabs is displaying form labels from a power portal form and the answers which have been submitted. In the model driven app, the full question is not displaying and for the staff who will be processing applications via the portal, they will have to hover over the question to see a tooltip of the full question.

So for example, a question might have 17 words such as "Provide some reasons as to why we need to consider your application for X, Y and Z". However in the Model App, the question might show as "Provide some reasons as to" and then you have to hover over the question to view the tooltip of the full question. I'm not sure how many columns there are as I'm not logged in at the moment.

Is there any way to resolve this and ensure the full label/question shows in the model driven app rather than having to hover over the truncated label/question? We demonstrated the tooltip workaround to the business users yesterday and the feedback was not good.

Can the answer be displayed under the label, as at the moment it's displaying to the right of the truncated question?

Any suggestions please?

Thank you

I have the same question (0)

The Sections on your Dataverse Form have a setting for the label position that allows for the label to be above the field.

However, generally keep your column Display Names in Dataverse short if long you will have other issues when viewing in Grids and etc.

Yea out of the box the label display name isn’t the best place to put a full question. It won’t look good and there are text limits. Plus the database col name would be awful to filter. I probably would have labeled it Question1 - X and let the Power page portal display the full question. What he did is put the full question as the field description, which makes the tooltip.

Now if you want to display the full question, you have to get a bit creative. There is a PCF control called Simple Notification in the PCF Gallery - https://pcf.gallery/simple-notification/

this control could display the full question for you and you then can hide the field label for the answer. You can use JavaScript to set the placeholder field’s text value to the full question, and then tell the PCF to use that text in its display.

A non-PCF alternative is to create a section for each question. Set the section header title to the question text. Section headers have a better tolerance for large text displays. However, you won’t be able to group questions together now, unless you do the grouping in tabs.

Thank you. Appreciate the detailed reply.

For the non PCF alternative, would it be possible to add section headers only for some questions that have lots of characters and then leave the other questions that are not truncated, as is?

I wonder if this would have any implications if we are integrating with BizTalk which would be polling Dataverse for a status change on an application and then it pulls data.

If we use section titles to display long questions, but also added the label field name, i wonder could the label field name be hidden via CSS for specific questions that are using a section title?

Hopefully that makes sense. No worries if not.

    Hi @thegreatdanton1

As they recommended in the publication, what you should do is create sections by questions. Place the title of the question in the session, add the field that contains the label but hide the label so that only the title of the section appears

Another option is to give the field a short name but replace it with the question in the form label.

Yes of course, you are able to pick and choose which questions have the questions in label headers or not. However I think the UI will start looking a bit weird because section headers are bold and field labels are not. For uniformity I would stick to one solution so your admins don’t get confused.

These changes are purely cosmetic so it should have no effect of Biztalk or any other 3rd party service connecting to Dataverse.

If you want to use the field label, there is a setting to show or hide it in the configuration. You shouldn’t need to use CSS as you’ll know exactly how long each question is so you’re not doing a dynamic show/hide.

Try this, Once the Main Form Opened,

    1. Select/Click on the SECTION where the field is Available.

    2. Click Change Properties at the TOP.

    3. Click Formatting and Navigate to Field Label position and Select TOP and Click ok --> Save --> Publish

    4. Next Switch to Classic mode and publish from there and close the window.

    5. and then publish again from make.powerapps.com model driven app editor.

    Here you go.
