I have been following Project Siena since DAY ONE. Thanks to all my mentor. Frankly I love the concept of Project Siena which PowerApps is "Missing at the moment" and hope will come back soon:
- Upload to Windows Store
- Side load to other users (Run PowerShell.. so easy)
- Able to write Off-Line
However, as of Microsoft's Strategy (my understanding), whenever it is under the Name of Project, eventually it will be write-off, soon or later. just like Google. Not surprising!
Minus Point of PowerApps
- Not supporting Windows Phone 8.1 from the very beginning, showing that MS has no confidence even in itself. So, My Lumia 820 which is still EXCELLENT and SMOOTH (to others OS's OLD phone), it is USELESS. I got to borrow iPhone to test my apps. What a SHAME! Is that so difficult to support MS's own platform?
- iPhone = Personal Entertainment; Android = Personal / Commercial; WP = Business / Enterprise. Since PowerApps is main for Enterprise, why opt-put WP (and Android) at the first place? Maybe MS is thinking from the perspective of USA, not even considering Europe and Asia. (Maybe initially MS think of iPhone takes up about 50% and only USA staff will use PowerApps...maybe...)
- Advertising on Read-Write Excel over Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive, but at the moment only WRITE. For READ, I have got the message from the Team that they are WORKING ON IT
- Android Support - OTW
- Sharing Out of Work / School group - OTW
- Open to public user? No News
PLUS points of PowerApps
- Support Cloud-Based Data, esp common cloud like Dropbox. I have tested on my SP4 (i7 8GB) and myf friend's iPhone 6s. Dropbox is updated almost instantly (I received notification within 5 seconds). Malaysia broadband is slow..about 3.5MB download, 300-400KB upload.
- Read / Write (please speed up)
- Improve features on:
- GPS Support, Speedometer, Card Gallery, Scrolling Screen (useful for Phone small screen)
- MS Office / PPT style editing
Other features: 95% same as Project Siena.
My Personal Perception of PowerApps concept:
- An office staff or even manager would not be using PowerApps to create apps to help themselves. What is the point of doing extra job without additional rewards? Overtime to finish the work, Let IT do it,.. Unless it is for personal satisfaction.
- Use Excel file even a little tedious. Excel is so good and easy to use.
- Will company IT manager is willing to let other staff to link app to company SAP or SQL Data? security issues?
- Use Handphone to take picture of data, send thru WhatsApp to office to update manually. What is the big deal?
[Above are my real experience since day 1 PowerApps was announced on the 30/Nov 2015. I am trying hard to use PowerApps to help and do business for small set-up].
Currently, we are writing PoweApps, as a free apps to help School in Malaysia. That's what we can think of.
