PowerApps environment shifting for canvas App.

Hi Everyone

I have few doubts regarding the PowerApps environment for canvas App.

Question 1:

Basically, if I want to build an app, I should be developing it in the test environment. So, if the same app is again exported to the production environment for end users, why not develop the app in the production environment in the first place?

Question 2:

If I want to make any changes to the app in the production environment, should I make the change in the development environment and then again export it into the production environment?

Question 3:

And my last question would be for each and every change in the app in the production environment   should I make changes in the development environment and then deploy the updated app to the production environment.?

Question 4:

what would be the best way for the exporting the app, cuurently it is not linked with any solutions , sharepoint lists are my datasource for my lists , is there any videos or articles for a proper referance of this

Could anyone please explain this to me briefly?

    Hi @Danny_Dicaprio ,

I also use SharePoint, so I will share my process. I am sure that others will give different responses to this.

The main customer I do work for presently is relatively small (about 100 users mainly in the field). I have a couple of processes depending on the complexity and relative risk of the changes.

If it is a minor change or an added function, I tend to do it in production and have a smaller group of experienced users test it. If there are any issues, I use "save as" on the new version and roll back the live app to the previous good item. Once sorted, the test version can be exported as a zip package and then imported over the live version creating a new live version. For larger changes, I do it in a dev environment and have the same group test it for a couple of days (linked to live data). If OK, I do the same zip export/import.

If I have done option 1 above, I also update dev with the same zip package process.

Please click Accept as solution if my post helped you solve your issue. This will help others find it more readily. It also closes the item. If the content was useful in other ways, please consider giving it Thumbs Up.

    Hey @Danny_Dicaprio,

I develop apps within a solution in a dev environment, test environment for user testing, and prod environment for live production. I would say it is probably best practice to make any new changes in your dev environment and ensure its working before deploying it to the production environment. This is what I do for any changes I make as you don’t want to potentially disrupt business processes if you accidentally make a change that breaks the app for example.

I don’t know if there’s a best way, aside from doing an export and import of the app/solution as WarrenBelz mentioned, but my team has set up a DevOps pipeline which automates the process.

If you haven’t started building apps within a solution, I highly recommend it as it allows you to use environment variables which makes migrating to different environments much easier, rather than going into an app to change all the SharePoint lists to point to the production SharePoint lists.
