Passing Configuration from Copilot Studio Agent to MCP Tool

Hello Microsoft Support Team,

We’re integrating Copilot Studio with an MCP (Model Context Protocol) tool and need to pass custom runtime values like conversationId and userId from the Copilot agent to the MCP tool.

Could you please guide us on:

  • How to include these context parameters in MCP requests,

  • Whether they can be defined in the manifest or sent dynamically at runtime, and

  • Any reference documentation or examples for handling such contextual data

Thank you,

    Hello, thanks for you question

First, I’m sorry to disappoint you, but this is not the official Microsoft support team. It’s a public community forum hosted by Microsoft. Sometimes Microsoft employees take a look, but there’s no guarantee.

When using MCP with copilot studio, copilot studio send the id and param alone with the orchestration mode, it's not you who choose the parameters, it's the agent by it self.

Here is an old but detailled guide made by another community member :) https://github.com/microsoft/mcsmcp and here is a thread dedicated to question about it :) lot of already asked question there : https://github.com/microsoft/mcsmcp

    i hope i could have help a little :)

Realistically, you can pass the data in the Payload, you can update your MCP Server to parse out that information in payloads that or do custom orchestrations.

Its not impossible, its just not as simple as setting a header.
