Dataverse Security for Makers in scalable environment

Hi everybody,
and a happy new year!

There is one question, which I cannot find any answer for.
Yes, I am aware of many best practices, documentation about Dataverse roles and similar stuff.
Let's assume:
I have a DEV Environment for all my makers in my company. They have the typical "Environment Maker" role and can play around. The environment is of type sandbox.
Now the makers ask for Dataverse. They would want to create Apps using custom tables in Dataverse.

This is not possible with above role. So I grant them System customizer role.
Now they can create dataverse tables and add them to their solution.
But they are not granted access to their custom tables. They can configure the table columns, but cannot add rows.

What am I getting wrong?
It cannot be the approach to grant System administrator roles for Makers just to give them the chance to user Dataverse instead of SharePoint?

Thanks for helping out.

Power Platform Admin Center → Environment → Settings → Users + Permissions → Security roles → New role
    • Create a new security role (e.g., “Maker – Env Dataverse Access”)
    • For Custom Tables, grant Read -> Organization and Write -> Organization and (other relevant permission)
    • Assign this roles to the development team.
If you haven't provided proper schema level access to the makers in the dataverse this is the common issue.

    Hi,
    thanks for the quick reply.
That works for any existing custom table.
So the overall process would be:

    1. Maker starts developing
    2. Maker creates custom table and columns
    3. Maker asks admin for a new security role
    4. Maker waits for admin ...
    5. maker waits for admin ...
    6. Admin does his stuff
    7. Maker can proceed with his work.

System Customizer role is limited in that those users can't see actual data with the exception of a few out of the box tables:

Privileges required for customizing apps build on Dataverse - Power Apps | Microsoft Learn (Can view all custom tables in the system but only view rows (records) in the account, contact, and activity tables that they create)

That said, when working with Dataverse, devs are usually given System Admin in the dev environments.

    Thank you,
    Alex Shlega
