Does the Dataverse Capacity Addon require a Premium license?

Hello community,

I was recently asked a question about Dataverse capacity / licensing that I could not answer. I can't find anything in the current Power Platform License Guide that helps me.

Is a Dataverse Capacity Addon, which I can buy in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, dependent on Power Platform Premium licensing?

Respectively is it possible to create Power Platform environments by ordering Dataverse Capicity Addons if I don't have a Power App or Automate Premium license?

I have the same question (0)

I don't think it's dependent on licensing to buy add-ons. But why would you not initially buy the Premium licenses and add-on capacity later?  Each Premium license comes with 250 MBs of capacity, and the first premium license that gets added on the tenant will grant you a free 10GB capacity.

Note that if you are a developer for Power Apps - you can stand up a free E5 developer tenant to do all the testing you need without licenses to worry about. https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/dev-program

The idea was, if you do not need a premium licensing per se, because e.g. only the standard connectors are used. But you would like to use another productive environment in addition to the standard environment. Is there then the possibility to realize this without premium licensing only with the AddOn.

What I didn't know is that the first premium licensing comes with 10GB of DataVerse capacity insteat of 250MB. In that case, licensing the AddOn would make the Dataverse capacity more expensive than the first Premium licensing. And this shows me, that this idea is nonsense.

    Glad I could help!
Just to clarify so I don’t lead you down the wrong path - you can create as many non-Dataverse environments for testing and development as you’d like without a single premium license or additional capacity. As soon as you create a Dataverse environment I assumed you’d be making apps or flows connected to Dataverse but that may not be the case. If you stick to canvas apps and sharepoint as the data source you can achieve a lot too!
