Licensing PowerApps for devices

Hello,

One of our customers wants to start with PowerApps.

The question I can't find an answer on in the official documentation is if it it allowed to buy licenses for devices in stead of users. It's not really multiplexing.

there are several users that will use the same tablet and will use a specific app.

Do they need to buy for every possible user a license? or is it ok to buy a License for that single device?

    HI @Anonymous ,

Do you want to buy a License for your device instead of users to run a PowerApps app?

If you want to buy a License for your device instead of users to run a PowerApps app, I afraid that there is no way to achieve your needs in PowerApps currently.

If you would like this feature to be added in PowerApps, please submit an idea to PowerApps Ideas Forum:

    https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/PowerApps-Ideas/idb-p/PowerAppsIdeas

Actually, the Office 365 License or PowerApps standalone license you purchased is bound to a specific user. When the user sign in PowerApps, PowerApps server would validate if the current sign in user own a proper license to access PowerApps.

If you want the each user to be able to run PowerApps app, you should assign proper license to each of them. Purchasing a license for a device is not supported within PowerApps currently.

As an alternative solution, you could consider create a common test account, and assign proper license to it. Ask your end users to use the test account to run PowerApps instead of using their own account.

    Best regards,

    Re: Licensing PowerApps for devices

    Hi,

Licensing is per user (as you have to log into Office365 in order to access PowerApps, even on a mobile device), although if they already have any of the following office licenses they can already use basic PowerApps (without premium connectors):

    Office 365 Business Essentials
    Office 365 Business Premium
    Office 365 A1 for Faculty
    Office 365 A1 for Students
Office 365 A1 Plus for Faculty
Office 365 A1 Plus for Students
    Office 365 A3 for Faculty
    Office 365 A3 for Students
Office 365 A3 for Student Use Benefit
Office 365 A5 for Student Use Benefit
    Office 365 A5
    Office 365 A5 for Faculty
    Office 365 A5 for Students
Office 365 Education E3 for Faculty
Office 365 Education E3 for Students
Office 365 Education for Homeschool for Faculty
Office 365 Education for Homeschool for Students
    Office 365 Enterprise E1
    Office 365 Enterprise E2
    Office 365 Enterprise E3
    Office 365 Enterprise E3 Developer
Office 365 Enterprise E3 without ProPlus
    Office 365 Enterprise E5
Office 365 Enterprise F1 includes PowerApps for Office 365 Enterprise F1

You can check licensing options here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/pricing-billing-skus#powerapps-for-office-365

I know it would be ideal for you to have one device license, but that doesn't scale-up in terms of business licensing models. Let's say you had 100 employees and one device (unrealistic, but it gets the point across), Microsoft would then not receive licensing fees for 99 users as they'd only be getting that once license fee. If we scale that up further to thousands of employees, the lost revenue starts to multiply quickly.

    Cheers,

    ManCat
