File Upload Not Usable for Summarization in Copilot Studio Chatbot

Hi everyone,

I'm encountering an issue in Microsoft Copilot Studio when I upload a file (e.g., PDF, DOCX, etc.). The file uploads successfully while interacting with chatbot, but it doesn’t seem to be indexed, and the chatbot is unable to use the content for answering questions or generating summaries.

Even after waiting some time, the bot doesn't recognize the file's contents. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a step I'm missing to ensure the file is indexed properly and accessible to the bot? what is the best way to accomplish this?

Any help or insight would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

    Hi

Ensure that Dataverse search is turned on or set to Default. This is crucial for the files to be indexed and searchable

Please ask the environment admin to enable this

    Hopefully this should help you.

here the recommendation was to clear your browser cache and cookies. Sometimes, issues with file indexing can be resolved by refreshing the browser or trying a different one

my assumption is that the files are within the size limits

    Hi Balagopal,

    Thanks for the info!

Just to clarify — my issue is with files uploaded during a chat, not via the knowledge base. The upload works, but the chatbot doesn’t seem to use the content (e.g., for summaries or answers). I’ve checked file size and tried different browsers, but no luck.

Do you know if real-time file parsing is supported? Or is there a specific setup needed for the bot to read these uploads?

    Appreciate any guidance!

    Thanks,

Apparently, the documentation says it's not supported yet:

    It says:

A user can't send or upload attachments to the chat. If they try to send an attachment, the agent replies: Looks like you tried to send an attachment. Currently, I can only process text. Please try sending your message again without the attachment.

This limitation applies to all channels, even if the channel or user-facing experience supports attachments (for example, if you're using the Direct Line API or Microsoft Teams).
