According to the word-watchers at Merriam-Webster, the word "bourgeois" (pronounced boor·jwa) probablydoesn't mean what you think it means. That's because Americans tend to think that everythingFrenchis fancy and high-class. But bourgeois is not connected to upper-class status. Instead, it refers to somebody or something that's decidedly basic, like a boring middle-class life.
