Trying to add Fields to a Form - Fields are not populating. But I do see the fields option when I select the Data Table Option with the same data set

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help.  I am new to Power Apps.

When I load my table in PowerApps it seems to load properly. If I try to add a Datatable, I get the options to add all of the fields in my Table (see attached jpg - Gallery). HOWEVER, when I try to add an editable Form, and use the SAME Datatable that was loaded, I get a greyed out "Add Field" option - no opportunity to add fields (see attached jpg - Forms).

Does anyone know why this is doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Hi @AdamSeth

    Your datasource must be an actual datasource as defined by its connector, ie. OneDrive for business, SharePoint, SQL, etc.  It cannot be a collection.  Click on the tin can icon on the left side of the screen to identify the true datasources and collections. In the screenshot, only the top 3 sources can be used for Edit forms.  It is possible to create an edit form for a data source that relies on the selection in a gallery or datatable control that uses a collection.  In that case you need to use a lookup in the Item property of the Edit form to select the record to edit.  This is done typically by using a formula such as

    Lookup(datasource,ID=DataTable1.Selected.ID)

    in the Item property of the Edit form.

    Thank you so much for your quick response. Truly appreciate it. I tested it and you are absolutely right. The filters showed up when I added those sources!!!

    So you mentioned "Your datasource must be an actual datasource as defined by its connector, ie. OneDrive for business, SharePoint, SQL, etc.  It cannot be a collection." How do I make an Excel spreadsheet as datasource?

    Sorry, might be a fairly basic question - just an HR guy trying to navigate PowerApps to get a tool created. 🙂

    @Drrickryp

    Thanks again for the help!

    Hi @AdamSeth

    Make sure the spreadsheet is formatted as a Table.  Then put the Excel file in your OneDrive for business or Dropdbox account . Then click on the tin can on the left side of the screen and at the bottom there are the connectors.  Open the one holding the Excel file and select it. Follow the prompts and it will be added as a datasource to your app. Annotation 2020-05-14 122949.png

    Oh, now I realize what the issue is with that - my excel file is larger than the limit 😞 Do you know of any workarounds on that? Thanks again for the help!

    Hi @AdamSeth

    Yes, don't use Excel.  It is too limited for a decent sized database. (I think of it as PowerApps with training wheels).   Export your Excel file to SharePoint or consider using SQL or CDS.
