Recommended Way to customize Ribbon in a new system

Dear community,
I'd like to raise a question regarding ribbon customization in model driven apps.

Some background:
My team is building a new CRM system based on Dynamics 365 Service while we decided to setup a custom model driven app to tailor user experience.

Now there is the first need to extend the ribbon of a standard entity.
In the past we have used XRM Toolbox / Ribbon Workbench Editor to customize ribbons. Now, as we gonna build a new system I'd like to challenge this behaviour.
First of all there is the new command bar designer in maker studio available - something many of us have been waiting for several years.
On the other hand a dev colleagues came up with a 3d party solution "Develop1 Smart Buttons" to ease the adjustments.

Even if I have a personal opinion which way to go for this new system, I would like to gather some crow experience first.
Should we stick to the used process with ribbon workbench or shall we go with the 3rd party solution? Or might it be even more future proof to go with built in command designer?

Looking forward to get your impressions.
I have the same question (0)

    Hi there,

I've personally always used the Ribbon Workbench, it's been reliable and has always been capable of doing what I needed it to do. When the command bar designer came out, I found that it was not as thorough as the Ribbon Workbench, but I understand it's come a long way. So I'd upvote Ribbon Workbench / the inbuilt designer.
With Scott Durow having joined Microsoft now, I would assume that it should be just as good now? I haven't actually used it for a while.

I haven't used any other 3rd party solutions to do this either, I think that it's safer to keep it within the same known area and stick with the inbuilt stuff, as I have seen the ribbon XML break in ugly ways when something goes wrong.

    Cheers,

    Ryan
