Feeding Context Data (eq. String/object) into Copilot via Webchat Framework

I’ve been working on embedding Copilot into my web application using the Webchat framework JS, following this Microsoft Copilot documentation. My goal is to pass some contextual data (e.g., ProjectId) into Copilot so that, when a conversation starts, Copilot already has access to this information to help build relevant topics.

Here’s my use case in more detail:

  • My web app has different modules (e.g., Projects, Tasks) that load Copilot inside an iframe based on the user’s current context.
  • I want to build topics in Copilot that respond to specific user phrases (e.g., "Analyze" or "Summarize") depending on where the user is (e.g., in the Projects or Tasks module).
  • The key point is that I want the ProjectId or TaskId to be part of Copilot’s context when the conversation starts, so it can query information related to that project or task and respond appropriately (e.g., by providing a summarization).

My question:

  • Is there a way to send this contextual information (e.g., ProjectId or TaskId) into Copilot when the iframe loads?
  • Can this data be accessed from within the topics or conversations in Copilot to guide the responses?

I’ve looked through the docs but haven’t found a clear way to pass this data into Copilot or retrieve it from within the topics.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or recommendations to achieve this use case with Copilot using the Webchat framework.

    Hello,

I am working on something similar and was wondering if you managed to find a solution. I would appreciate it if you could share.
