Activity Data migration - Is the Sort date best practice? What is Formatted Start Date used for?

I am planning a data migration (from one D365 environment to another) and want to preserve the date of the original activities (email, appt, task, phone calls).

  • The native behavior of the timeline is to sort by Modified On. That is problematic in a data migration given that all the imported activities will have a new Last Updated (aka Modified On) date being nearly the same.
  • I know about the Sort Date field and plan to populate that with the activity date from the source system. If I am not mistaken, then I will need to build some automation to continue populating that field after the data migration, correct?
  • I plan to sort the source data by date/time so that the oldest are loaded first in a futile attempt to keep the Modified On resembling the original order of activities.
  • One of the challenges I will run into is if there are employees that are no longer in the organization and are required Activity Parties (ex: email "From"). Your suggestions are appreciated.
  • Does anyone know what the "Formatted Start Date" and "Formatted End Date" fields are? They appear to be read-only and blank.

I have been developing & implementing solutions full time in this platform since CRM 3.0, and learn something new every day. All comments are welcome! If someone has current/deep experience in migrating activities, I would like to hear your thoughts.

Activity data migration is always a challenge. So my approach is always to create a custom table to dump past activity history and add into respective forms as Subgrid.
