Is Dataverse viable for large amounts of data?

Hi all,

I have been looking into the capacity limits for Dataverse for Power Apps and was curious about something.

Microsoft states the default capacity for Dataverse for Power Apps is 10GB, but only 50MB per app. Does that mean each app is only allowed to use 50MB of storage in Dataverse?

If so, I want to have a system that stores a new record in Dataverse for each task created, and each task will have a few relations to other tables. When tasks have been completed they will be archived not deleted. So they will continue to take up space. Are these limits a concern for me?

Thanks

I have the same question (0)

    Where are you seeing 50MB per app? That is not correct.

    Presuming you’re using Dataverse proper and not Dataverse for Teams, there is no limit on storage. You will hit a point where you need to license more, but that would be a long way off unless you’re generating hundreds of thousands of those tasks a day.

    Hi @BenClistBC2 ,

    I was looking at the document here:

    https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2085130

    Under the chapter: Power Platform Dataverse Capacity.

    As long as that wont become an issue, that's alright.

    Thanks

    @BradonK

    So, that's the additional capacity you get for every app you add. You get the default capacity (either 10GB or 5GB depending on your license), and then the additional stacks on top of that. Then if you ever run into that limit, you can purchase additional.

    Ok that's useful to know.

    However, I understand with simple tables that will take time to fill up, but what about tables with image attachments?

    The plan is to have multiple images on some tasks so it could take quite a bit of space.

    We will be making up 10 - 20 tasks a week.

    Thanks

    So that would come out of the file capacity, which has a base level of 20GB. You have a few options if you don't think that would be enough:

    1. Purchase more as a Dataverse add-on, this is the most expensive
    2. Spin up your own Azure Blob Storage (which is what the Dataverse file storage is under the hood). This is more effort to setup but is cheaper
    3. Use SharePoint for file storage, this is usually the cheapest option if you already have access to SharePoint, and if you're creating a model driven app is a very simple integration to enable

    I have worked with SharePoint before so that's probably the best best. I was trying to avoid have more than one storage location but It doesn't seem avoidable.

    Thanks

    My personal advice is you should absolutely be using Dataverse. SharePoint Lists is not a suitable data source for running proper business applications at scale. If you're worried about capacity in Dataverse you're going to be in a world of pain with SharePoints speed and query limitations.

    It should only be used for what it is good at, which is file storage.

    @BenClistBC2 ,

    Unfortunately I think just using Dataverse will become tedious. I will absolutely use it for the data side of the system, but need something different for the images.

    There will be most likely 10 - 20 images per task. 10 - 20 tasks per week. That quickly adds up to 10GB and will constantly need to increase storage.

    Sorry my previous post wasn't clear, I believe that's absolutely the right approach.

    My standard for clients unless the requirements dictate otherwise is a model driven app on Dataverse, with SharePoint for file/image storage.

    Yeah that seems like the best way to do it.

    Thanks for the help.
