Hello everyone,

I would like to get some help around how to better manage environments within Power Apps.

At the moment, we have un-managed solutions in Prod, UAT and DEV environments. It's causing issues each time when we try to deploy code changes into different environment. One of the most common challenges that we have faced is that the changes made in UAT and DEV are not populated in Prod after we have successfully imported the solution. We had to manually made the changes into the Default Solution in order to make it work.

What is the best approach to sync all these environments so that I can start deploying only Managed solutions into UAT and Prod environment. We would like to have a better control over the codes and versioning so that it is much easier for us to deploy changes between environments. Making changes manually into different environment carry risks of having the codes/configurations not sycn between environments and high chance of prod failure after deployment.

Any advice/guide on how to do this would be much appreciated.

I would start with few questions then define strategy before fixing the solution?

Who are developing applications? Business users or Professional devs?
- If it is Business users, you might want to explore Power Platform pipelines which needs managed environments. This might lead to environment strategy and licensing given managed environments got separate license requirements.
- If the applications are built by professional devs then you can consider using Azure devops pipelines automation.
Given you don't have any managed solutions in Prod and UAT, you could also start with manual approach to deploying the solution then go back to previous question?
If you wanted to replace the unmanaged with Managed, first you need to remove all components then deploy a new solution. If you deploy a new managed solution the app URLS will change. To remove the solutions you might want to ask further questions to get the clarity on how you approach this.
- What is the business impact and criticality of each application?
- How many users are using Production environment?
- How many components you have in unmanaged solution?
- Change management
- Communication to business users.
