PowerAutomate: How to trigger automations from events in non-MS apps?

Hi, I'm new to PowerAutomate.

To what extent does MS PowerAutomate work with non-Microsoft (proprietary) apps?
Is it possible to detect events or conditions in such apps, and use them to trigger automations?
Do you need to set up a dedicated integration between PowerAutomate and your proprietary app (eg using webhooks, JSON, APIs, Zapier or whatever)?
Or does PowerAutomate detect events at the GUI level (eg when in this app, in this menu, with this file open, when user clicks in this cell trigger an automation)?

I want to detect an event in a proprietary financial app (specifically, when a user attempts to authorise a payment in a purchase management app) and have a pop-up that displays a message (like a checklist) before the user confirms the payment. Even better if the automation could also detect a prerequisite condition (eg an authorisation code exists) in another app (probably Excel) and use that to trigger the pop-up message if necessary. In other words, if the user tried to authorise a payment prematurely (where no payment authorisation yet exists for that purchase) display a warning message in a pop-up. If they proceed with the payment anyway, send a notification (eg email) to the relevant stakeholders.

I hope that makes sense. Any help much appreciated 🙂

Charlie
