Canvas apps connection to data in a Share Point list that was created through an Excel file: Be wary of line breaks in column headers!

Hello!

Our organization experienced weird problems with a canvas app... and found a solution. I wish to share this solution with the community, in case anyone else ever has the same problem.

The problem:

  • I am the owner of a canvas app, and one of my colleagues is a co-owner.
  • When I try to edit the app, everything is fine:

  • When my colleague tries to edit the app, all of the formulas "break" with mysterious line breaks:

  • When my colleagues tries to edit the app, the code is pretty much broken everywhere, with these line breaks throughout the app, but always at the same places.

Problem exploration:

  • The app connects to a Sharepoint list where the data is stored.
  • The Sharepoint list itself was created using the "Create a list - From Excel" functionality in Sharepoint:

  • At first glance, everything in the Sharepoint list looks just fine.
  • However, we went back to the original Excel file from which the Sharepoint list was created.
  • We noticed that the column headers from the original file included line breaks:

Implemented solution:

  • We removed all line breaks (and also removed all non alphabetic characters, just to be sure) from the original Excel file.
  • We recreated a new Sharepoint list using the corrected Excel file.
  • We reconfigured the canvas app to use the new Sharepoint list as a data source.
  • Everything now works fine!

Hopefully this post will one day help somebody, somewhere!

Keep 'em flowin'!

Charles
