Unique record ID with autonumber

Hi,

In CDS i am trying to create a field in my entity that automatically assigns a unique record ID to each new record as they are created. I have tried creating a new field, with the data type set as autonumber, but i get this error message:

"The entity could not be updated: Attribute cr31d_recordid of entity cr31d_handover is not an Auto Number attribute. Please confirm the inputs for Attribute and Entity correctly map to an Auto Number attribute.."

Any ideas what's wrong?

Did you follow the steps outlined here?

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/common-data-service/autonumber-fields

Please try these steps, and let me know what issues you encounter. There are a few things to note: the field will be a text field, or must be an existing text field, and it only works in the new solution experience.

    Hi @atray13 ,

Could you please share more detail about your scenario?

If the field type is set as the AutoNumber, the AutoNumber field would be automatically generated when a new record is created.

When you have defined the AutoNumber field, you need to refresh the CDS entity connection before you implement any patch actions.

If it still doesn't work, please share more information about how did the error come about.

    @atray13

Try to create an autonumber field in another entity, if you are able to do it and it works fine you must have a process running in the background of the entity that you are trying to create the autonumber.

If you share more details we might be able to help more.

To supplement on the other posts, there's also a nice tool in the XrmToolBox to manage auto numbers which can simplify your work:

It is possible that the autonumber tool in xrmtoolbox added to the issue. There was a bug and I don't think the auto numbering is resolved. I noticed in my little personal environment that auto-numbering is not working as expected.

    Hi @atray13

Were you able to resolve this? If yes then how?

Re: Unique record ID with autonumber

I just had this same issue. I was unable to update my text field to autonumber and I was also unable to add a new field with autonumber to the same entity.

I went into the settings for the entity itself and updated a setting, saved, and then I was able to edit the existing text field to autonumber.

I don't think the setting I updated made the difference, I think the entity needed the update. That said, I went to the section "Create and update settings" > "Enable change tracking".

I hope this works for others!
