Smartcard (CAC/PIV) Digital Certificate Signature

Hello,

I am looking for a solution that would allow users to sign the PowerApps Canvas forms using the digital signature from CAC or PIV. I know there are solutions available that captures pen input as image, but what I need is a capability to allow users to complete a form, then click a button to pop up the "select certificate" dialog, and save the digital signature to the form entry and perhaps export the form as a PDF including the digital signature.

With many DOD and Federal agencies using CAC or PIV to sign forms and documents, I can imagine there would be a great need for these kind of features. I am hoping I can find something that works in GCCH environment.

Cheers,

I have the same question (0)

Hey @Steven4tech  - Sorry to say I don't have an immediate solution for you however, I do know of resources I would talk to, if I were trying to resolve this issue. None of the resources are free, however, if they found a way to do this....then at least there is a way.

    1. Summit 7 Systems - Summit 7 | Cybersecurity & Compliance for the DoD
Summit 7 is a Microsoft Partner who works primarily with Gov Contractors and if anyone has come across the need to do a CAC card authentication with Microsoft products, it has to be these guys. Check them out.

    2. OneSpan - Electronic Signature, Cloud Authentication, Mobile App Security | OneSpan
I spoke to this team a while back to discuss potential e-signature solutions. What I learned is they actually work very closely with USG customers for digital certificate solutions and DUO w/ microsoft products. I think they would have the skill set and knowledge to figure out a solution to your question.....I just don't know if they would be willing to take on a side project.

Of course, knowing the right companies leads you to the right resources and friends in the industry. I wish you the best of luck and will keep this post in mind, if I come across anything helpful.

Did you find anything further on this? I am working on something similar.

You may already know this but it’s important to define digital signature vs. e-signature. While many gov agencies have in the past used digital signatures in PDFs or InfoPath that gave you the certificate & PIN prompt, it’s important to ask the question: Is a digital signature a requirement or will an e-signature suffice?

Digital signatures have a special definition that includes cryptographic validation with a CA. E-signatures do not have that requirement but can be implemented via PowerApps if you enforce the nonrepudiation requirements such as auditing and CAC login (likely you CAC login already to M365/PowerApps, redundant to do it again).

In the end, the hardest part is to ask the right people to define the true requirement for signing docs and not accept “that’s how we’ve always done it” as an answer. I’ve posted a sample solution on another thread of how I’ve implemented esignatures for DoD Form 2875, feel free to take a look at that for your implementation.
