How to save drop down choice to Sharepoint List

(1) ShareShare

I have a SharePoint list that I went to Integrate, and created a Power App.

I have all working except for a specific drop down at the end.

In the app, we fill out all the information, and then at the top right, click the check mark and it updates the sharepoint list with the information.

In the last dropdown, when you choose a specific item, and click the check mark at the top right, it is not updating that specific column in the list.

How do I get it so when I choose information in that drop down, and click sumbit at the top right, it commits what we chose to the sharepoint list?

The column we are updating in this list is a text column.

The first thing i noticed was that CaseSpecialty_Datacard2 appears to be edited in a way that it does not like. are you able to share what all the red Xs (errors) say. also did you delete a Datacardvalue that was inside CaseSpecialty_Datacard2? was this intentional if not just delete and re-add the datacard field as a quick fix (make sure you save any formulas you need). If it was intentional what changes did you make and why so i can understand this a bit better?

Keep in mind, I am learning as I go.

When I create the app straight from the sharepoint list page, this is what I get.  This is the default below.

    assignments 4.JPGassignemtns 3.JPG

So the problem I was trying to solve, is the box is empty from the start.

For this column I need to have a list of choices to choose from.

I can either do 1 of two things..

The skillset I am trying to get (that is the categories) are from another SP list, called engineers.

I was having trouble getting those to show up.

So I removed the datacard, and put in a drop down box, and started to just input the categories manually, which is totally fine.

So the end goal is for them to choose a category from the drop down, and when I click the check mark at the top right, it submits all fields to the Assignments SP list.

Here are the errors I am getting right now.

Again, I removed the original datacard.

I then tried a drop down, but that was not working either.

So I copied a datacard from another field, and started to update "Items" that way.

Chosing them works, but I can't get it to commit to the SP List.

I dont mind starting over if you have steps on how to make that last combo box work correclty.  Keep in mind, I dont know what I am doing, I am learning as I go lol.

Don't worry at all we all learn something new at one point 🙂

So there are two ways to do what you have described. just remember both store the input as string/text.

go to the one you added in this picture:

    AJ_Z_0-1641762030654.jpeg

click on the form and go to properties and make this change before you make any other changes:

    click on to edit fields:

    AJ_Z_1-1641762166559.png

    then identify the relevant field:

by default it should say edit text:

    AJ_Z_2-1641762222951.png

we want to change that to Allowed Values:

    AJ_Z_3-1641762262040.png

then we just need to adjust the items property to be the values you want.

    thats option one.

the second is to add a combobox inside of the datacard and then click onto the text  input and change it's default to whatever you called the combobox.selected.value  then we again change the items property and we can make the text input invisible but not deleted.

When you get all this done send me the name/title columns from this sharepoint list engineers i can guide you through referencing it in the box as the items

Ok, so the list that we are working with is called Assignments.

The column we are trying to fill is called CaseSpecialty.

The actual "specialties" are located in another list.  Engineers and the column is Skillset.

And thank you, option 1 worked perfect.  If we can figure out the calling of the skillset, that would be cool so I dont have to change it in the app if they change in the future.

No worries that is what the community is here for 🙂

Now if you havent already i will need you to now unlock the datacard casespecialty by clicking this:

    AJ_Z_0-1641763076176.png

next go to the items and put in:

    Engineers.Skillset

double check the spelling and capitalisation matches up. I am expecting skillset to be a text column let me know if it isnt.

Now the dropdown should give you values if there are skillsets available but you will also likely get an error.

This error should be on the update property. it should have a red line and say something like:

    DataCardValue.Selected.Value

we will need to change this to:

    DataCardValue12.Selected.Skillset

again doublecheck the spelling and capitalisation.

let me know how this goes

Let me add, I was trying to add the skillsets from the other SP list, and at one point I got it to work, but it populates the box with the first choice, and I was having issues making it blank, before they choose a skillset.

Are you saying you are having issues with blank skillsets appearing and you need them filtered out? apologies if i am misunderstanding but if so this items should be. Filter(Engineers.Skillset,!IsBlank(Skillset))

if the issue is blank and duplicate Skillsets you need to make this the items:

    Distinct(Filter(Engineers.Skillset,!IsBlank(Skillset)),Skillset)

So, here is what I have when doing the skillsets

    assignments 7.JPGassignments 6.JPG

So, the issue I had earlier, I did have a bunch of issues trying to populate the Items with the skillsets from the other SP List.

At one point, I got it to work.  Lets say for example these are the skillsets:

    Mail Flow

    Hybrid

    Calendar

Since Mail Flow is first, it would automatically populate that box with Mail Flow.

What I wanted was the box to be blank when they opened the form, then they choose the category.

That was giving me so much trouble, I just ended up manually adding the categories to "Items" along with a blank.

@AJ_Z Just an FYI - when you set a field type to Allowed Values, PowerApps exposes a property on the DataCard called AllowedValues.  It is there that you would just change that to the items you want and then there are no other changes needed to anything in the Datacard or controls.

The only caveat is that the table you provide in the AllowedValues needs to have a Value column.

So, this formula in the AllowedValues would have done the trick:

    RenameColumns(
     Distinct(Filter(Engineers.Skillset,!IsBlank(Skillset)),Skillset),
     "Skillset", "Value"
    )

You know me...always looking for the easy method 😉
