Excel Power Query crashing

Hi
 
I am getting the below error message  when I create a new query, or create a new query.  The following I got when I try to create a new query. 
 
Can someone please help me.   Thanks and appreciated.

    I did take a look at what is happening. Your M code looks very suspicious. Your code is trying to load the Excel file as Binary content:

    If you were loading a Table from the Excel file, then your code would look more like this:

    Sorry for posting the question in a wrong forum.
     
    My issue is not with M-code.  Whenever I try to create a new query or refresh an existing query; the application crashes and generating the following error.

    I used Copilot for this reply but I think the list of things to check are pretty valid.

    Based on the error details you shared, this looks less like an issue with your M code and more like the Power Query engine itself is failing to start. The key line in the stack trace is the container process exiting unexpectedly with code 0xC000026F. When that happens, Excel can’t even generate a preview, so it crashes before any query logic runs.

    Here are a few things you can try that often help with this type of crash:

    1. Test with a blank workbook
      Create a brand‑new Excel file, then try Data > Get Data > From Other Sources > Blank Query.
      If it crashes immediately, that confirms the issue is with the engine, not the file.

    2. Move the file out of OneDrive
      Even if your query isn’t referencing OneDrive, Excel and Power Query sometimes fail when the workbook itself is stored in a syncing folder.
      Try saving it somewhere like C:\Temp and test again.

    3. Pause OneDrive sync
      If OneDrive is locking files or mid‑sync, the Mashup engine can fail to initialize.

    4. Clear Power Query’s local cache
      Close Excel completely, then delete the following folders (they’ll be recreated automatically):

      • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerQuery

      • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\AnalysisServicesWorkspaces (if it exists)

    5. Start Excel in Safe Mode
      Run excel /safe from the Run dialog.
      If Power Query works in Safe Mode, an add‑in is interfering.

    6. Check antivirus or endpoint protection
      Some security tools block or terminate the Mashup container process.
      Look for anything referencing:

      • Microsoft.Mashup.Container.exe

      • Microsoft.Mashup.Container.NetFX.exe

    7. Repair Office (Online Repair)
      The Quick Repair doesn’t always fix corrupted Mashup engine components.
      The Online Repair replaces the engine binaries completely.

    8. Try from a different Windows user profile
      If it works under a new profile, the issue is tied to your user‑level configuration or permissions.

    If none of the above helps, it may point to a deeper issue with the Office installation or the Windows profile. In that case, a full reinstall of Office or creating a fresh Windows profile usually resolves it.

    Thank you very much for looking into this and really appreciated.
     
    As suggested in Step 1, it crashes when I create a blank query.  So this confirms the error is generated by the engine.  
    Steps 4, 5 and 6 tried before I post the issue here.  Also, repaired the Office and also uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled, unfortunately there is no luck.  After all the above trials I posted the question here. 
     
    Only thing left is creating a new windows profile and try.  I will do that tomorrow and let you know the result.
