Import Excel Function Saves Dates in SP as Intergers and NOT Date Value

I am trying 'Import Custom List' into SP.

 

The Excel document has two columns formatted as 'short date' in Excel.

 

However, after import the date data in the columns appears as shown below in the SP list.

Date/Time is an option in the 'Edit' screen of the SP column.

 

However, when I click this option all the dates disappear, leaving the date column blank.

 

How do I corrected this translation issue?

    Excel stores dates as whole numbers where the whole number is the number of days after 12/30/1899 and the decimal is the fractional portion of a day.  You need to convert the number into a date by using AddDays() to add the whole portion to the date 12/30/1899.
