How can I diagnose why I cannot see a list or form when the 'access denied' messages tell me so little?

When I try to access a list, I receive this message:

When I try to access a form, I receive this message:

The help pages on security inform me that the following key components are used to provide and protect access in Power Pages:

  • Site visibility
  • Authenticated users
  • Web roles
  • Table permissions
  • Page permissions

How can I diagnose why I cannot see a list or form when the 'access denied' messages tell me so little?

    I should add that the above list and form are based on a Job Requirement Subcategory table.  I have set the permissions for that table as follows:

    The table includes a look up to a Job Requirement Category table.  I have set the child permissions for that table as follows:

    Hence, I can't see why I can't view the table and form and the lack of information on the 'access denied' messages isn't helping me.

    The issue seems related to Table Permissions and not the other components.

     

    I think your two table permissions are set to the same Table (subcategory table), I believe the parent permission should be pointing to the category table

    I have an interim solution for a table which does not have any relationships:

    • The permissions were assigned to the 'authenticated users' role, but I haven't set up authentication yet (because I just want to investigate the functionality of lists and forms at this stage) and hence I am not an authenticated user
    • If I assign the permissions to the 'anonymous users' role, then I can view the data
    • I thought that if assigned permissions to the 'administrators' role, then I would also be able to view the data (because I am creating the site), but apparently not

    Clearly, I will need to set up authentication and assign permissions to the 'authenticated users' role, but that is for another day.

    I'll also check whether the above also explains the problem I was having with tables which do have relationships, or whether I configured it incorrectly as you suggested, but I first need to reload some data.

    sorry I got confused, did you review the table that the permissions are pointing to? I feel like it's pointing to the wrong table, that's why you are not able to view the records

    Hi Oliver

    For other reasons, I created a new environment and hence needed to recreate the tables and reload the data.  In summary:

    • It looks like lack of visibility was due to having assigned the permissions to the 'authenticated users' when I wasn't an authenticated user
    • I have visibility of both the Categories and Subcategories tables when I assign the table permissions to the 'anonymous users' role
    • I don't need to set up child permissions on the parent table (Categories) to be able to view the lookup field on the child table (Subcategories) which is looking up data on the parent table

    I will need to set up authentication and assign permissions to the 'authenticated users' role, but that is for another day.

    You do not automatically get Table permissions, they need to be assigned to a Web Role that is either directly attached to your Portal User or an Inherited Web Role (such as Authenticated ). Similarly, your Portal user may also not get the Administrator Web Role automatically assigned to them - it used to get assigned to the first user of the Portal after you have installed it, but have seen where that behavior does not happen.

    Also after making changes to Web Roles/Table Permissions you will need to Sync (clear the portal cache) of the portal for the changes to reflect straight away.

    It is helpful, as I'm hoping to set up authentication and assign permissions to the 'authenticated users' role soon.  Just have to balance this dev work with lots of other stuff.  I'll let you know how I get on.

    Thank you @MJWhite !  I am new to Power Pages, and I was having the same issue.  Setting the permissions to allow anonymous users fixed it for me.

    You are welcome.  Glad it helped.

    It is only an interim solution, because in the future I will want to restrict access to authenticated users.  But I haven't yet got to setting up authentication to test assigning permissions to 'authenticated users'.  I've had a brief look and it isn't as simple as an 'enable authentication' checkbox!
