Dataflow error while inserting with a lookup field: "A record with the specified key values does not exist"

Hi PowerApps Community,

I need to build a Dataflow to load 2 Excel files into Dataverse.

  • Excel AA contains 1 table, load into Table AA.
  • Excel BB also contains 1 table, load into Table BB.
  • Table BB has a lookup field to Table AA. Hence, a key was created in Table AA for mapping purpose.

However, when I ran the dataflow, I got the error: A record with the specified key values does not exist in AA entity. How can I build the dataflow to insert Table A before Table B without hitting the above error?

Thank you

Hello, @JLKM, I am familiar with this error, you need to make sure that all the foreign keys in your Child Table (BB) already exist in the the Parent Table (AA). Thus, make sure to Load the Data into the Parent Table first (AA).

    1. Create a DataFlows to Load the Data into AA
    2. Then create another Data Flow to load the Data into BB
    3. If you are going to continuously run those flows, make sure that to schedule the AA dataflow to always run before the BB dataflow.

Here is a full TUTORIAL for the Excel to Dataverse Migration which is very similar to your use case.

    Hi @AhmedSalih

    Thank you for your tips.

But is there a way to do this with just a single dataflow and somehow configure the sequence of inserting the tables?

@JLKM, DataFlows can extract data from multiple tables in the same data source but only feed the result into one Table at a time.

Check this for more info: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/dataflows/add-data-power-query

    Hi Ahmed,

This is a very valuable comment, I was struggling to follow the steps explained in this video Populating LookUp Columns in Dataverse Dataflows (youtube.com) which results exactly with "A record with the specified key values does not exist"

The way you explained this limitation suggest that there was no chance the solution explained in video could work?
