Custom Text Values for Lookup DropDown

I have a lookup control rendered as a dropdown list on a portal form page. Default behavior is to use the entity Primary Name field as the text value of the drop-down datasource. I'd like to concatenate the name with another column value and use that as the text property of the drop-down.

"namefieldvalue - coll2value"

I cannot change the data in the table itself.

Perhaps I can update via JavaScript? Or maybe I should hide the control, create my own drop-down loaded via fetch, and update the selected value on the hidden control when the new dropdown selected value changes?

There must be a simple way.
