What is the best way to create a copilot for this...

So apologies in advance is this has been answered elsewhere!

So I am complete noob to this kind of thing but I want to create copilots for my clients based on data I am collecting in my research for them.

The data is a mix of 'structured' data, e.g. numbers, company names, dates, and unstructured data is the form of free text. I have tried doing this with just excel and it works to an extent in that I can ask about a technology and it does a nice job of summarising it within limits plus it provides citations from the file. However if I ask it to summarise the technology from company x it falls over. In other words it doesn't seem to cross reference the rows or cells.

The data in excel is obviously 1 row per entry.

In my (probably naïve head) it should be straightforward but clearly it isn't, unless of course I'm doing something obviously wrong. Except it's not obvious to me.

Thanks in advance and all help is gratefully received!

    Good morning,

I hope you are doing well. If I understand correctly, you would want your copilot to query your data to answer your questions (correct me if I got it wrong).
From what I have tried, copilot extracts the text from your document (so the link between columns is lost). If I want to query a database in the type :

    CompanyNameTechnologyNameTechnologyDescriptionImportantNumber
Microsoftmy technologyThis company is doing XXX2
    Googleother technologyProduct Description6

You will be able to treat the product descriptions just fine but I guess you'll have trouble doing something like "which company has the highest ImportantNumber?".

What I would do is either A) link everything in sentence to transform it into full text. B) Try another tool to do that. power BI / Microsoft Fabric is integrating copilot functionalities to query data tables and create dashboards from them.

    Hope it helps.
    Have a great day!

Hi...so you're guess on the format of the data is correct 🙂

I tried putting this into word, not as a sentence per se, but also not tabulated. So I had things like:

    Owner: Microsoft

    Abstract: xyz

It got better but still not good enough. I'm going to try creating a topic to so this.

    Thanks!

    Good morning,

I think your idea is pretty good. Maybe a bit of prompt engineering could help you with results too (maybe add a description of the table in the system prompt?)
Working on data is always the best option.

    Have a great day!
