Power Platform environment types

Hello,

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong group, if so, please advise where i can post.

I want to build a Dev, Test and Prod environment for my power platform set up.

I am slighlty confused on which environment Type to use for each enrollment.

I would have thought i would set as Below

Environment Name Environment Type
Dev Developer
Test Production
Prod Production

I would have thought Test should mimic Prod, so the type should be the same?.  If not, what should test be?
What is the diff between Dev and Sanbox?

At this moment, i dont need the dataverse - can this be added on at a later date? The environments (dev, Test and Prod) will not be managed due to financial constraints,

Will the above set up be OK. can anyone foresee any issues?.

Kindly go through the Microsoft official documentation - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/admin/environments-overview?tabs=new

Can you gve examples the difference between Developer and Sandbox.

Most users have an E3 License. To use a sandbox, do they need a Developer license, or will their E3 cover it.

Is sandbox the prefered option for Dev Envs. Do you have a list of all the pro and cons for each?

And what about Test Env?... Surly that should mimic Prod?.

I want to use Azure Dev Ops to migrate content from Dev to Test to Prod.... Is there any limitation in using a Sandbox over a Developer?

    Developer Environment:
    • Comes free with the Power Apps Developer Plan.
    • Not available to E3 users unless they sign up for the Developer Plan themselves.
    • Cannot be used for team or production work.
    Sandbox Environment:
    • E3 alone does not grant Dataverse access.
    • In-addition you need:
      • Power Apps per app/per user license or
      • Allocate environment capacity using add-ons (e.g., per environment plan or pay-as-you-go)
    High-level

    Use Case Use Notes
Individual experimentation Developer Env Free, isolated, no sharing
Shared development Sandbox Env Supports team work, backup/restore
User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Sandbox Env Ideally copied from Prod
Production Production Env Live apps and users

UAT should be mimic of PROD, so while exporting the managed solution from UAT to PROD will be straight forward and no challenges in the solution deployment process.
