CDS for Apps database storage

Please can someone help to clarify the following:

"CDS database is a data lake in Azure" vs "CDS database is the same as/creates a D365CE/CRM database"

So either CRM databases are data lakes in Azure or CDS database isn't...?

Reason for asking is I've uploaded data via the CRM UI and it's now warning that I'm running out of storage

@SrikumarNair To piggy back off of this thread.   I followed your link about purchasing more data, but it seems like the information being provided by powerapps licensing page is contradicting what you are saying.

    From your licensing overview page:

" The maximum capacity for the Common Data Service is 10 GB per database and 5 TB for file storage per environment. If you buy additional capacity and the available capacity (with licenses and add-ons combined) is more than the maximum capacity, you can use the total amount across multiple environments. "

Does that also mean that if we have larger amounts of record data we would need to partition this data across multiple enviroments and, if so, how would we handle model-driven apps that require information across multiple enviroments?

    The article futher says:
"see the PowerApps pricing page for the capacity quantities that each PowerApps license includes."

However all I could find was how many databases and enviroments could be created, not the capacity that each license provides for those enviroments, does this mean that each database naturally comes with 10gb of storage?

    Thanks!

hi @lewishm, the 5GB quota applies only to free/trial instances. For instances with paid licenses, the database storage capacity is determined by number of paid licenses or storage add-ons that were purchased. The limit for a production database is very high and we continue to support the largest database for all the customers that we have, running into TBs. Here is some information on how to manage your storage :https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/customer-engagement/admin/manage-storage

If you  have a paid license, I would suggest creating a support ticket with your tenant details and we can help resolve any specific issue with your tenant.

    Thanks,

    _Sri

Hi @SrikumarNair - I understand that is the case but what I'd like to know is if the CRM database is going to be the CDS database long-term it needs to be larger than 5GB (which is what the email saying it's reaching capacity quotes) in order to handle additional data from e.g. D365 Talent.

The CDS database is the same as/creates a D365CE/CRM database. So you would have all the entitlements and storage consumption that you experience in D365.

Hi @lewishm - the primary database for CDS doesnt currently use an Azure data lake, regardless of the technology though we need to sort out your storage. Adding @SrikumarNair from the platform team to comment on storage.
