Using Managed Identities as a service connection in pipeline

We currently use service connections that use Service Principals for authentication.  We would like to try out Managed Identities instead so we don't need to manage the secrets expiring every 2 years anymore.

What is involved is changing to using Managed Identities?  Do you really need to setup a  VMscale set to use them?

Is it worth it to change from a simple Service Principal, even though you have to manage the secrets?

I am also going through this. I have setup managed identities and granted proper access to environments. I have gotten as far as setting Managed identity in service connection of the ADO project.  kavya_sp_0-1711740325286.png

But I am testing this service connection with Managed identity with "Who am I" task in YAML pipeline, it errors with this message-

    "

    [
"Error: The value passed to '--url' is invalid. No Dataverse organization was found matching the specified criteria (--url https://<environment>.crm.dynamics.com/)."
    ]
    [ '' ]
    [
'Warning: Argument --url will be deprecated soon. Please use --environment instead.'
    ]"

Can someone help me to get this right?

To me it reads that you don't have the URL of the environment entered correctly.  Copy and paste using PPAC, details of the environment.

@byrnep , I have the URL setup correctly and it works just fine when I use Application Id and secret authentication method for the service connection. When I switch to Managed identity, it throws error.

If there is any other approach than setting up  VM Scale sets , please share .

    Hi Kavya,

I have same requirement to use Managed Identity for PowerApps Pipeline. Please let me know the steps to create and use Managed identity.

I suggest looking at Workload Identity Federation Preview · microsoft/powerplatform-build-tools · Discussion #884 (github.com) which allows you to connect without secrets and passwords
