Need some advice on building an app with SQL and Dataverse

Pretty new to Power Apps so please bare with me.

Trying to create a visitor logging app. I have the data of visitees and their rooms in SQL server on-prem.

The app has like Dataverse table to store visitor logs (I could also add visitors and/or visitees tables) but I would like to know if I should get visitee data from SQL so it is up to date or import from SQL to Dataverse table and set up a flow to refresh. A SQL search or look-up with the visitee name so the rooms retrieved are accurate is also something on my mind.

Moving data to DV and syncing with Flow I feel like would be more expensive so I do want to use on-prem SQL server connection but my concern is if I can show the data in the app and wouldn't that need to refresh or is it like a live connection?

I would love some advice on what direction would be an efficient way to develop this app.

Thanks in advance!

PowerApps has a built in connector for SQL. So it will work like any datasource (Dataverse) in your app. This is one of the powerful aspects of PowerApps. Just like using Dataverse, SQL will require that you have Premium licensing. So as long as you have that, go to the Data tab in PowerApps and search for SQL. Then just enter the server information. If you plan on having other users accessing your app, they will also require Premium licensing.

In answer to your concerns, a connection to SQL Server would work like a live connection. There isn't any refresh or sync that's needed.

A pre-requisite is to install the on-premise gateway on a machine in your local network. There are details in the link below.

The gateway should always be online so if it looses connection with the internet, the SQL data will not be accessible from Power Apps.
