Guidance Needed for Creating a Job Application App with Power Apps for My First Project

Posted on by
Hi everyone, I just started working for a small company and was asked to create a job application app using Microsoft Power Platform. I recently got my certification in Power Platform and want to use Power Apps to showcase my skills. This is my first-ever project, and I'm looking for guidance.

The app should allow job applicants to:
  1. Submit their applications via a form.
  2. Save and manage submitted data for review by the HR team.
  3. Potentially include an onboarding section as the next phase.
I've explored Power Apps and know how to create forms using galleries, but I'm unsure how to make the app accessible to external applicants and ensure smooth data management. I'd like advice on the best practices to implement this app.

  • What is the best way to make the form accessible to external users who don’t have access to my company's environment?
  • I plan on using Sharepoint, but open to considering Dataverse. (sharepoint over Dataverse due to cost)
  • Are there resources or templates available that can help with this type of app?
  • How can I integrate the app with an onboarding process in the future?

Any advice, resources, or suggestions to help me get started would be greatly appreciated. I want to make sure this app is efficient, scalable, and convincing enough to allow me to kick off my career using Power Platform.

While it wouldn't be a good project for someone who's just getting started on the Power Platform, PowerApps Pages (fka Portals) are another way to collect form submissions from users.  You can expose dataverse forms and list views to anonymous users, or have them available to authenticated users based on security roles.  You can have a very simple form requiring anonymous users to make an account and then they can submit the full application and upload documents, etc once inside the portal.

There is a fair amount to consider when doing this regarding security and how many active visitors you expect to have to portal page, etc., but it's a powerful option.

You can also expose lists of job openings publicly on your portal page (making a Career Site type page), and integrate with services like Indeed that can crawl your page on a regular basis to scrape and advertise your job openings.

The application would not be generally available to external applicants. For that you would need to use something like Microsoft Forms which can write the data to a SharePoint list which would then let you process it as you desire.
SharePoint would suffice for this type of application.
Look at the available templates in the start screen.
You did not describe the onboarding process. What integration do you think would be required? Any onboarding process which you create would be able to access any data which is captured in this process.
