Unable to edit Outlook eMails saved to SharePoint by Power Automate

Posted on by 10
I have a power automate flow which is initiated when certian emails arrive.
The flow captures the email and saves it to a sharepoint folder.
I can open the file to view but not to edit. When I attempt to open the file (using open "in app" from SP). I get this error...

I am the owner of the sharepoint folder.

The power automate flow has 3 actions:

  1. When new eMail arrives
  2. Export eMail
  3. Create File

I want to be able to save eMails from outlook into sharepoint and then open those eMails to edit in either outlook or Word.
I have also tried saving the emails with the .docx extension but I get the same error.

    Hi,

You cannot directly edit a .msg file (an Outlook email file format) in SharePoint because .msg files are static representations of email messages.  What exactly do you want to do with messages in SP and edits?  Sorry, I don't understand the question here.

You can get the body of the message into a docx file but then it is not an email message but a Word document.

    Thomas, thanks for your response.

I want to be able to save eMails in sharepoint and then modify their content.
The eMails do not have to be in a .msg format. Any editable format would suffice.
I did try saving them as .docx but the same error is generated.

Also, if we save the eMails (.msg) manually directly into sharepoint from outlook they are editable.
It's only when I add the automation using Power Automate that they are not editable.

Note: to edit the saved files I'm using the "Open In App" selection in SharePoint after the files are saved.

Create File step.... save as .eml

    concat(item()?['subject'], '.eml')

When I did this to create an email archive, it saves the entire email, which then can be replied to or forwarded.

The eMails in this case are actually documents which we receive from outside sources (not attachments).
I was hoping to be able to save the body of the eMail in SharePoint as a .docx file and then be able to
modify it. Since it's a static file (thanks for that information) I'll need to determine an alternate approach.
For now, the project is deemed not needed.

    Thanks.
