Short Responses from Child Agent When Routed via Main Agent in Copilot Studio

Hi everyone,

I'm using Copilot Studio and have enabled the multi-agent feature.

I’ve noticed something odd: when I ask the main agent, it correctly identifies which child agent should handle the request but the response I get is very short and lacks the depth I expected.

However, when I ask the same question directly to the child agent, the response is much more detailed and follows the instructions I configured for that agent.

I’ve already tried several different prompt styles and instruction formats both for the main agent and the child agents but the issue persists.

It seems like something is being lost or limited during the routing process.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Any tips on how to ensure the child agent responds fully even when routed through the main agent?

Can you tell me, if you can look at the Activity Tab and click on the child agent step and see if you can see the response there?

Just curious if you see something larger but when you access it from the Parent somehow its less.

Hi @Michael E. Gernaey,

The response tab from the child agent in Activity shows the full response but the response from the main agent is only a summary of the full response.

Have tried to limit this behavior by giving instructions but that was of little help. Please help with it.

Responding to user input or event triggers
The agent takes the information returned from all knowledge sources, tools, agent, and topics that it selected in response to user input or to an event trigger, and summarizes an answer to any originating user query.

So, the details of when an agent responds, essentially is the knowledge source, not necessarily the answer from the Main Agents perspective. It's using that to try to answer.

If the sub agent is returning the information it should be putting that in a Variable in the Main Agent.

1) Tell your Main Agent directly, do NOT summarize XYZ agents response, just use the entire resopnse as the answer.

Do this in either your general tab of the agent, or in the Topic Steps

If its setting a variable, then you can leverage the Variable to push the entire response also.
