Analytics question for converted chatbot

My chatbot was previously the 'classic' version, and we were using the extra code to have the bot initiate the conversation (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-virtual-agents/configure-bot-greeting?tabs=web). I was aware that doing this would result in a much larger session count, as every page view would be counted as a session.

Now we have converted to the new chatbot I was expecting the session count to reduce dramatically, but it's still at the previous levels. Have I got this wrong, should it not now only count those who initiate the bot by clicking the launch icon?

Re: Analytics question for converted chatbot

@mrkckny The sending of a greeting message is what triggers the generation of an analytic session.

In the classic version of Power Virtual Agents (PVA), the greeting message was not automatically sent, so by sending adding code to send a message, the count of analytic sessions would increase.

There are a couple of other considerations, depending on how your bot previously generated the greeting message and changes made when after it was converted.

    • In the classic bot, the greeting topic was a system topic. In the latest version of PVA with the unified authoring canvas, the greeting topic is now a user topic and a new conversation start system topic is available that can automatically send a greeting. If the canvas of the converted bot is automatically invoking the greeting topic, this can result in the analytic session being considered engaged. This will not change the overall number of sessions, just how they are classified.

    • When the analytic session is first generated depends on when/how your bot loads it content. If your web page pre-loads the bot before it is launched by the end user, then an analytic session will automatically be generated if the bot is configured to automatically send a greeting message. To avoid this, if the bot is in a minimize state on the page, do not load the bot until the end user clicks on the bot to launch it.
