When should I go for Canvas Apps vs Model Driven vs Portal

Hello,

Let's assume we have a complex solution requirment with more than 12,000 metadata spanning over 200+ SharePoint lists or Dataverse tables.

With above statement, how can we plan for Canvas App, Model Driven or Portals.

We know that,

Canvas Apps : More design oriented, but has threshold of 500 controls and 30 data sources

Model Driven : Less customisation

Portals: External User access

Considering above points, which solution will be best fitting? Do we have any check list document before deciding which power apps model we should choose. Please advise

    Hi @PRAVEENZNMD ,

Sorry - I do not use Components. The extra coding time is well worth knowing everything will work as expected.

    Hello @WarrenBelz,

We have converted all on screen galleries to a single component with multiple galleries. For the component we have created an input property with table as return type. Seems like number of control threshold is not hitting after converting on screen galleries to component

    @PRAVEENZNMD ,

The most I have on one app is 48 lists, but a couple of them contain over 50k items and several over 20k.

    Hello @WarrenBelz ,

Great, can you please share some more details regarding data structure. Does your app has more than 50K metadata and 170 datasource added?

    Thanks,

    Praveen

    Hi @PRAVEENZNMD ,

I have several lists over 50,000 and about 170 active lists - all works fine on Canvas Apps / SharePoint as long as you plan your data structure properly.

    Hello @WarrenBelz ,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Unfortunately we are not in a position to split app. Since our metadata has more than 12000 with 200+ lists, it might impact canvas app right? As data is more important here we are looking for model driven. Let us know your thoughts

    Hi @PRAVEENZNMD ,

A couple of documents that may be useful - Model-driven app overview and Canvas App v Model Driven.

I can only comment on Canvas to any great extent, but will clarify what the limits stated are advisory - I have an app with 48 lists/libraries and a lot more than 500 controls and it has functioned perfectly for a number of years.

You can also consider breaking up your app based on functions required into several apps.
