Power Apps connection with Azure SQL Managed Instance (MI) having only private endpoint

We’re connecting Power Apps (and Power Automate) to an Azure SQL Managed Instance having only private endpoint using Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) authentication with a Managed Identity. But any attempt to establish a connection is failing.

Can you recommend the supported approach and required configuration to connect Power Apps/Power Automate to Azure SQL MI using Entra ID/Managed Identity, and help us troubleshoot why the connection is not getting established?

    Direct connection from Microsoft Power Apps / Microsoft Power Automate to Azure SQL Managed Instance using Private Endpoint + Managed Identity is NOT supported.
     
    Why it fails
    • Power Platform runs in a public cloud environment
    • SQL MI is inside a private network (VNet) → no direct access
    • SQL connector does not support Managed Identity
    Best Approach
     
    Use a middleware layer:
    • Azure Function (VNet integrated)
    • Use Managed Identity to connect to SQL MI
    • Call the function from Power Apps / Power Automate (via HTTP or custom connector)
