Integrating Common Data Service Model Driven App with Microsoft Project OnLine

Hi...greetings to the community in these challenging times..I hope everyone is well!!

I have searched for any previous posts on this but the prevalence of the word 'project' in many posts makes it difficult to separate my specific context.

I have been developing Model Driven Apps based upon the Common Data Service.  I have now subscribed to Microsoft Project OnLine.

Am I now able to create an application that leverages both the core Common Data Service entitites AND the Project Online entities?  Ideally i would like to combine Contacts/Accounts with the full set of Task entities, forms and visualisations.

When i create a new Power Apps environment, if I select Dynamics apps I am told i don't have the license.  But is there any way I can deploy the Project Online app?

Thanks

Ged

    Hi @ghdunn ,

Did you buy a Project Online license or Project for the Web license?

You can create a lot of Model-driven apps and entities, but the deployment will be on the Project for the Web.

    Thanks @renatoromao

I must admit to being a bit (very) confused by the landscape of project licensing.

I took out Project Plan 3, but then enabled Project Web App.  Is that different from 'Project for the Web'?  Is there a simple reference to explain how this works?

I am trying to understand the differences:

    • Project Online
    • Project Web App
    • Project for the Web
    • Dynamics Project Service Automation

As for 'deployment' i would ideally like to extend my current Power App with core CDS entities by adding a Projects entity with the various task functionality and visualisation.  I am guessing that is not possible, from what you have said?

    Hi @ghdunn ,

Is quite difficult but you will understand as soon 🙂

Project Online equals Project Web App: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/introdu%C3%A7%C3%A3o-ao-project-web-app-0c5b05b3-b444-438c-8b22-100d87ade40b

Project for the Web equals Dynamics 356 Project Automate: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/what-is-project-for-the-web-c19b2421-3c9d-4037-97c6-f66b6e1d2eb5?ui=en-us&rs=en-us&ad=us

These documentations will help you: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/get-started-with-project-for-the-web-50bf3e29-0f0d-4b7a-9d2c-7c78389b67ad

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/project-for-the-web/project-for-the-web-get-started-guide-for-admins

PS: Your license P3 is okay to use Project for the web.

As for 'deployment' i would ideally like to extend my current Power App with core CDS entities by adding a Projects entity with the various task functionality and visualisation.  I am guessing that is not possible, from what you have said?

Yes, if your Project for the Web environment is able, you can use all entities.

Good luck and I hope that you can do more with Power Apps.

Renato...lol...the mists have cleared...the single clearest set of documents/references. I have come across...and of course i will give much kudos...but if I could just push my luck for one more cycle, since you are clearly an expert!

You say: "Yes, if your Project for the Web environment is able, you can use all entities."  I am unclear as to how i access that.  If I create a new Power Apps environment, typically I think I can only see the core entities.  As mentioned in the OP..I could try to add a 365 set of apps but it says i don't have a licence.  What is my route to seeing a set of entities with both CDS core AND project for the Web entities.  I don't think I have seen anything that uncovers that.

..ahh..sorry..more learnings.  I have managed to access this in by DEFAULT environment, but not in any other environment I have created.  Do you happen to know why this is?

    Hi @ghdunn ,

    No problem 🙂

When your Project for the Web environment has been provisioned, all things are on the Default environment and you cannot change this yet.
