Dataverse Model Driven Apps - Open in Excel Online - Insufficient Permissions

(1) ShareShare

Posted on by 31
Hi all,

Up to now, Open in Excel Online has always been available for users but today it seems as though a new error has struck my MDA users.

{5}{2}(Id = {3}) is missing {0} privilege on {1} entity (OTC={4}).
Consider adding missing privilege to one of the {5}{2} roles for the request to succeed.

Error code: 0x80040220
Session Id: 474bcab0-eb36-4740-a576-5e50bd6adb27
Activity Id: b4839aec-a881-4d37-a98d-dd15de9484e2
Time: Tue Feb 03 2026 15:39:06 GMT+0000 (Greenwich Mean Time)

Please can I be guided in what new permissions there are for this element as this has never been an issue in the past?

Thanks!
I have the same question (1)

The message suggests a Dataverse security role problem with a privilege on a specific table identified by an OTC (Object Type Code).

A bit of research suggests this could be Export to Excel at an Organisation level in the user's Security Role and that recent security updates may be strictly enforcing this now.

Thank you for your response. I did go into my security roles and the "Exported Excel" role is already applied to Organisation access for Create, Read, Write, Append and Append To permission levels. I can't actually see a role for "Export to Excel" as you described, where would I be able to find this?

Would I need to also include the Delete, Assign and Share levels too?

I also saw some research that suggested that OTC 4 is equal to the "Lead" table in Dataverse, however I cannot see this accessible anywhere in my security role config so I'm really unsure how to access that entity, or if indeed that is actually true.

I have never struck this error myself, however the message definitely suggests it is permission related. I believe you only need read to export to Excel, so elevated permissions are probably not an issue.

I am also seeing a number of Excel-related error posts  in the last week or so, so your issue may be related to this and the fact that it worked unti recently probably confirms a release bug.

Interesting as when I attempt it with my System Admin privileges it does work, which makes me think it must be to do with security role permissions. I did see the Export to Excel permission within the Basic User role so I have applied that to my user but they are still unable to access Open in Excel Online. Quite perplexed by this...

    @WarrenBelz

Update, I've been able to resolve this, there is an entity in the role privileges called "officedocument" that needed to be enabled :)

All good now, thank you for taking the time to respond to me!

Now a days Microsoft is not giving the Full Error in the front end, you can see this error by following this

Make the error Pop up again, Click F12 (Click Console) you can easily find what error we are getting (permission issues)

    Hi Warren,

I had the same issue yesterday, but a bit different:

We confirmed that we have enough privilege of Office Document but the issue still there. While we tried to figure out, we found that :
The “Collaborate” Permission set worked! It appears that it needed more than “Read” permission to the entity as mentioned by the log.
Looking at this, it appears that it needed an access level to each on each of the permissions.

I’ll create a separate role for the “Open in Excel Online”.

However, I’d like to understand what happened on Microsoft’s end that triggered this issue. Is there any announcement or article detailing what happened yesterday?

As mentioned by others, if you open the browser console and review the error messages, you’ll see that Read, Create, and Write permissions must be enabled for the table officedocument in order to use the Excel Online feature.

That said, the behavior does not appear to be consistent across environments. In another environment I manage, the officedocument table does not exist, yet Excel Online works as expected—just as it did previously.

Has anyone found official documentation from Microsoft explaining this change? Or does anyone understand the underlying logic—specifically why this requirement applies in some environments but not others?

MS has listed this in known issues, however no resolution provided as of now - we have to update our Security roles
@Edvard Check if your environments are on the same version - the ones with lower versions don't have officedocument available. We updated all the apps and opened a ticket with MS to match all our environment versions, over this weekend (14-15Feb 2026) all environments have been updated to the latest version and all now have officedocument available
