A Question about Workng with Environments (From Production to Sandbox back to Proctuction)

Hi,

It's my first post here so please don't be judgemental. I recently got a job in which I've got to develop some PowerApps on the Dynamics 365 Project Operations platform. My boss asked me to make intel on how to make a copy of the currently running Production Environment to a Sandbox. I think I got this part right, there are a few simple steps to do in the Power Platform admin center to achieve this.

The question is as follows. In current production Env, there is obviously CDS running gathering data from day to day events. If I were to make my development on Sandbox env there is only a way to create this on separate CDS. If that is the case then if I would be happy with my developments in the Sandbox environment then how would I go and implement them into production. I would be able to convert Sandbox env into production and replace the old production version, yeah sure, but then we would have lost any data that came into the old production between the period if making a copy and then replacing the environments.

I'm really sorry if my question is silly and I've got everything wrong. I've gotten thrown into deep water by my boss and I'm very determined to live up to their expectations. If someone would be so kind and tell me how this workflow should look like I'd greatly thankful.

Thanks,

Konrad

    Hi @indyanin,

Your observations are correct - if you promote your Sandbox to Production then you will lose the data that Production has.  There is a feature called Solutions by which you propogate configuration changes from one environment to another as part of Application Lifecycle Management.  Take a look at the Solutions documentation as a starting point.  You may also want to take a look at Microsoft Learn to study up on some of the basics.
