Why can't I use Dataverse in my app?

Recently, I was given admin rights for PowerApps in the company I work for so that I could do more with PowerApps, ex. try using Dataverse. I started building an app and would 'play' it from within the building environment, all without issue, until, I decided to try it on my tablet and got my first pop-up message warning, "Start a free Power Apps premium trial. This app uses features that come with a Power Apps premium plan. Start a trial to use these features."

So then I tried playing it from within a browser (Microsoft Edge) and got the message,  "This app uses features that come with a Power Apps premium plan. Start a trial to use these features."

It seems I've spent time building an app that I can't use... am I understanding that correctly?

Question: how do embark on building an app knowing ahead of time what features I can/cannot use so that I don't encounter this problem again? Is anyone able to provide guidance around this? Or do I have to just waste time building apps guessing if it's going to work or not because I've used a mysterious feature that's apparently not available to me?

Thanks in advance,

Kristine

    Hi,

Have you tried setting up a developer environment in which you can test all premium features?

It is indeed possible to make an app that you eventually cannot use because you lack a specific license to use premium features.

    Best regards,

    Koen

    Hi Koen,

No, I have not... I just clicked on the link you provided to enable this, however, "test all premium features" seems like a lot of pain for possibly less-than-worthy results... cost > benefit. FYI, I'm now seeing the message at the top of the screen in the Power Apps environment, "This is a developer environment and not meant for production use." I've got that image embedded below.

I did not realize that one can create an app that one cannot use... I assumed that if something appears to be available and usable, upfront, it is in fact available and usable. Apparently, this is wrong thinking and you have clarified that for me, thanks.

I will pull back on my Power Apps endeavours, limiting myself to what I know works.

Thanks so much for your reply, Koen.

    Sincerely,

    Kristine

    Hi @kristinegriba

It's sad to hear that you lost your interest in powerapps because of this. The PowerPlatform is a great tool, also for "citizen developers", in which they can create great apps and automatisations. But since it is so powerfull, it also means that you might be wanting to do "premium" stuff, which it can handle out of the box, but requires additional licenses...
To be very brief (and possibly incomplete), you can use the Power Platform to make apps and automatisation for free when you have a Microsoft 365 licence, but you can only make use of (data) sources that are also included in Microsoft 365 (Excel, sharepoint, outlook,...). Once you need more advanced sources (like "real" databases, for example Dataverse, SQL,...) a premium license is required...

You can find more info on the (somewhat complicated) licensing details: Licensing overview for Microsoft Power Platform - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs

    Hi Koen,

Unfortunately, we are a very small accounting firm (8 people) and I am the only one making use of Power Apps. I think everyone is starting to see its usefulness with what I have done thus far, and I am constantly 'selling it' because I can see how powerful it could be, but I am a bit of a voice in the wilderness on this in our office. Consequently, changing/upgrading the license is not within my reach.

I won't be abandoning Power Apps altogether, I will just use it in a more limited fashion, i.e. right now my data lives in Sharepoint lists and document libraries.

All that said, thank you again for answering my question, you saved me much time and heartache because sometimes these kinds of things are really difficult to figure out.

    Best,

    Kristine
