Agents breaking after Copilot Studio updates - anyone else experiencing this?

We are building and deploying agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio and have run into a recurring issue.  Whenever there is a platform update, our agents break and require either a full rebuild or reconnection of components to restore functionality.

We are seeing this across multiple agents deployed to Microsoft Teams. The symptoms vary but typically include connected agents failing to route, knowledge sources dropping their Ready status, and system topics reverting to default behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this pattern? Specifically looking to understand:

  1. Is this a known issue with the current Copilot Studio release cycle?

  2. Are there any mitigation strategies — for example, environment configuration, solution management practices, or deployment approaches that make agents more resilient to platform updates?

  3. Is there a recommended way to back up agent configuration so rebuilds are faster when this happens?

  4. Does the issue affect agents differently depending on whether they use Connected Agents, SharePoint knowledge sources, or custom topics?

  5.

Any guidance from the community or Microsoft team would be appreciated.

Not as a single documented bug, but yes—this is a known behavior pattern.

After platform updates, agents can break because:
    • Connections get revalidated/reset
    • Knowledge sources get re-indexed or lose state
    • Routing metadata (especially for connected agents) gets re-bound
    • System topics may revert to default behavior
This is due to platform maturity + dependency fragility, not something you configured incorrectly.

Yes this is a widely reported pattern, not just you. Let me go through your questions directly.

    1. Known issue? Partially. The platform updates in Copilot Studio don't have a traditional versioning model. Microsoft pushes updates to all tenants simultaneously and there's no way to defer them. Knowledge sources dropping Ready status after updates is a confirmed known behavior. Connected agents failing to route is also reported by multiple community members and is linked to the ALM issue below.

    2. Mitigation strategies: the biggest one is solution-aware authoring. Make sure your agent is built and edited from within a solution with a preferred solution set, not from the default environment or outside a solution context. Microsoft confirmed a specific bug where new components added to an agent don't automatically sync to the solution if you're not editing from the solution context.

This means after an update, components that were added outside solution context can go missing.

For environment strategy: use separate dev/test/prod environments. Agents in the default environment have no protection layer and are more exposed to update-related drift.

    3. Backup: export your solution as a managed package from dev regularly. That's your backup. Copilot Studio has no built-in version history or rollback. The exported solution zip is the only artifact you can restore from.

    4. Component-specific impact: yes, they're affected differently. SharePoint knowledge sources are the most fragile after updates they rely on async indexing and can drop to Processing or Missing status. Connected agents (multi-agent setups) are the second most fragile because the routing metadata can become stale. Custom topics are the most resilient since they're stored as structured data in the solution and survive updates better than live connections.

For knowledge sources specifically: after any platform update, go to each knowledge source and manually trigger a refresh. Don't wait for it to self-recover.
