There are many people complaining about excel issues around this topic.

Many are using specific types of devices and versions of office, can you tell me what device you have and version of office please?

Also, I would definitely check in the Power BI and Fabric forums toos.

I definitely have seen many posting in the last few days.

    Hi,

I am using an Apple Silicon (3.07 GHz) (4 processors) and running Parallels Windows 11 Pro. I have been able to run Power Query without issue in previous months. Microsoft Office is Version 2601 I think. Per Excel it says Version 2601 (build 19628.20150 click-to-run)

I’ve seen this happen a few times, especially after Office or Windows updates. When the container fails, every connector breaks and you get the “Container unexpectedly exited (0xC000026F)” error even for simple sources.

    What normally fixes it:

    1. Close Excel completely

    2. Go to

      C:\Users\<your-username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\

    3. Delete the Mashup folder (this is the most important one)

    4. Reopen Excel and try Power Query again

If it still fails, open Excel → File → Options → Data and disable Fast Data Load / background preview options, then restart Excel.

If the issue started suddenly, an Online Repair of Microsoft 365 usually resolves it — Quick Repair often doesn’t.

On company laptops, this can also be caused by antivirus or endpoint protection blocking Microsoft.Mashup.Container.exe, which results in this exact error code. If that’s the case, IT needs to whitelist it.

Vasanth! Thank you for the response.

    1. I do not see the Mashup folder, I am guessing I may have deleted.

    2. I did not see the option specifically for disable Fast Data Load/background preview but I checked all the boxes to basically disable everything in the Data section and no change.

    3. I will try Online Repair again - I have done once with no change.

    4. How do you whitelist a program? I don't have an IT team.

    Thanks again

Ok wait, I did find the options. They are in Power Query Options, not Excel for anyone else following along. I Fast load was disabled and I disabled the preview.
